"Everything is rhythm. Every step we take is rhythm. Every word we speak is rhythm. There is no movement without rhythm."

WHAT IS

TAIKO?

The word taiko is Japanese for drum. Such a simple word has come to mean so much more. Taiko drumming is a vibrant and energetic form of Japanese music that combines athleticism, musicality, and cultural expression. Its roots are deeply connected to Japanese culture and can be found in festivals, religious ceremonies, and contemporary performances.

The style of taiko we play is called kumi-daiko, which is an ensemble style of playing, and allows the players to express excitement and raw energy with each other and the audience. The performances are a combination of movement and sound, characterized by intricate rhythms, dynamic shifts in tempo and volume, and powerful physicality from the drummers. Music is often used to tell stories and celebrate traditions.

Taiko offers both physical and mental benefits. It can provide a full-body workout, improve cardiovascular health and strength, and can even reduce stress and anxiety. Taiko also fosters a strong sense of community and belonging.

benefits

of taiko

There are many studies done about the benefits of drumming both for physical as well as mental health. We strive to improve ourselves and our playing but we also encourage our members to understand their limits and to work towards better health. We stress an understanding on how the body moves and functions and try to utilize a style of playing that does not wear out the players. We believe that conditioning and practice will provide benefits just like any other form of exercise.

Mind: The rhythmic and repetitive nature of the drumming can be therapeutic, reducing stress and anxiety and promoting relaxation. The mind is expanded by learning new pieces that can inspire and energize the players.  One must study, grow and think about their part of the ensemble so that they can add to the greater composition.

Body:
Taiko drumming provides a full-body workout, improving cardiovascular health, muscle strength, and coordination. True power while playing taiko is not created but it is transferred from the earth through the player and into the taiko.  This produces a sound that rings and allows the player to play longer and stronger.

Soul: The soul is applied by the player in creating memorable pieces that not only reflect the spirit of taiko but the internal power of the players themselves.  This power is shared amongst the players and eventually moves out into the audience so that there is created a collective experience that is shared by all.

Community: Taiko drumming fosters a strong sense of community and belonging, as people come together to create music and share their culture.
